CHAR-CONE

Students familiarize themselves with the media of charcoal by drawing a still life. Students demonstrate their understanding of value and form while strengthening their observation skills.

Charcoal Tools

For this project students will be working with new materials, including: vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, kneaded erasers, and blending stomps.

TONE PAPER

Using the side of a vine charcoal stick, apply a light level of charcoal to the paper in order to tone it.

DEFINE SHAPES

Sketch out the still life lightly in charcoal. Apply more charcoal to the shadow areas.

BLEND

Use a blending stomp to blend the shadows and mid-tones together.

HIGHLIGHT

Use the kneaded eraser to brighten up the highlighted side. Be sure to erase any areas that read as "outline".

CONTINUE

Go back and forth with adding, erasing, and blending the charcoal until you build the form as you visually see it. Move on to additional shapes or background if time permits.
