CHAR-CONE
Students familiarize themselves with the media of charcoal by drawing a still life. Students demonstrate their understanding of value and form while strengthening their observation skills.
Charcoal Tools
For this project students will be working with new materials, including: vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, kneaded erasers, and blending stomps.
TONE PAPER
Using the side of a vine charcoal stick, apply a light level of charcoal to the paper in order to tone it.
DEFINE SHAPES
Sketch out the still life lightly in charcoal. Apply more charcoal to the shadow areas.
BLEND
Use a blending stomp to blend the shadows and mid-tones together.
HIGHLIGHT
Use the kneaded eraser to brighten up the highlighted side. Be sure to erase any areas that read as "outline".
CONTINUE
Go back and forth with adding, erasing, and blending the charcoal until you build the form as you visually see it. Move on to additional shapes or background if time permits.
