MAKE A GRID

Draw a grid on the photograph. Breaking it up evenly into a 4x4 grid is recommended. Repeat this grid pattern on the toned paper using vine charcoal.

SKETCH IT OUT

Lightly tone your paper with vine charcoal. Then, using the grid, determine the location for large shapes in your image. Sketch the locations using vine charcoal.

ADD VALUE

Use vine charcoal to fill in values as the correspond to the original image. Use a blending stomp, your fingers, or a paper towel to blend the charcoal and blur the grid lines.

ADD MORE VALUE

Once the design is set, add compressed charcoal to darken the shadows, and white charcoal to create the brightest values. Blend it out.

CONSULT WITH GROUP

Reconstruct the image with the entire groups drawings. Give each other advice on proportions, values, craft, and composition. The images may not line up exactly, but the better they connect, the more convincing the final piece will be.
