TALES ON TILES

Grades 9-12
Students design a series of three 4.5"x 4.5" tiles using mixed media in order to express a personal narrative. Students will utilize a cohesive color scheme to add narrative context to their images.

SKETCH THE PLAN

In your sketchbook, plan a variety of designs for the 3 tiles. Take notes of ideas for color schemes and materials as you plan.

PREPARE TILES

Students prepare their tiles by applying two coats of gesso to their chip board. They should be working on preparing their tiles simultaneously with sketching.

BASE LAYERS

Students should apply their base layers for their canvases. This layer typically consists of paper, fabric, or acrylic paint.

BUILD UP YOUR LAYERS

Students are required to build three visual layers using at least four mediums. Students should plan ahead and lay out their ideas before making anything permanent.

MOUNTING

Students will mount their tiles on a 17.5 x 6.5 piece of mat board. The tiles can be oriented vertically or horizontally.

RUBRIC

Students were graded out of a total of 30 points. The project is worth 100 points. Students were graded on a curve with the following equation: [Grade]=(Score*2 +40)/100
